When you are playing scales are you thinking about the notes or is it more of a mechanical exercise?
When I'm playing scales I only think about what notes have to be sharps or flats and beyond that it's mechanics. After playing the scale a few times it becomes all mechanics, I'm no longer thinking about what note I'm playing.
Should I be focusing more on memorizing the each note in a scale rather than having it become a mechanical operation?
The same is true when learning a pieces of music. In the beginning I'm reading the music and thinking about each note but after some time I'm kind of just staring at the page and sort of scanning rather that actually reading the music.
