How do you play the Bass Flute?

Post by youngeddie »

Where can I find out about Bass Flute technique? I've got one on order and I've heard that it's a different animal than my regular "C" flute.

Are there online tutorials or videos that will show me the basics?

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Eddie

The basics are the same (same fingerings, same basic blowing technique), however, much like switching from flute to piccolo, the embouchure is a bit different. You will need a more diffused air stream, moving at a slower speed. Try to relax your embouchure as you are playing. Also like piccolo, there are some specialized fingerings that can be used (but do not have to be), and these can be found at www.wfg.woodwind.org.

Hi Flutepicc06,

Thanks for your reply to my Bass Flute query. I looked at the link you sent and I found the fingering charts to be very helpful.

Thanks again,

Eddie

I should admit that I'm am mainly a cello and bass player, but I've also been playing the flute for my own amusement for 25 years.

Those are interesting instruments...I do not understand the need for subsonic pitches, but it is pretty cool that they created a flute capable of producing them.
