I'm not sure what you're talking about, but my marching band used to do a warmup called "1-5-1's" (primarily for the brass). If it's the same thing, then you start with a note (say Bb), and go up a perfect fifth (in this case to F), and then back to 1 (Bb). Does that seem about right? If not, can you clarify what you're talking about?

Well I would guess for the 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 part, you're teacher is talking about the first 5 notes of a scale, in which case if 1 is Bb, 2 would be C, 3 would be D, 4 would be Eb, and 5 would be F.

In my high school marching band, we sometimes did an excercise called 5-5-9. We would start on the tonic of the given scale (the first note), and play the first five ascending notes, then would descend five notes back to the tonic. We would then go up and down 5 notes again. Then, we would play the scale, plus and extra note, then go back down.

In the key of c major it would be these notes in this order.

cdefgfed cdefgfed cdefgabcd cbagfedc

So....... they might be similiar?............
