i received an Armstrong flute from a girl who quit playing. i'm a beginner and still don't have a teacher, trying to learn on my own at the moment.
is there a way to play the lower B with a flute that has only a C roller footjoint? or do i need to buy a new footjoint?

Yes, we can help.

First, you cannot play a low B on a flute that only has a C footjoint. You generally cannot buy just a footjoint; you must buy a flute that is equipped with a B footjoint.

If you are a beginner, don't worry about trying to play a low B right now. Actually, beginners should not worry about any notes lower than D. Wait until you develop your skills a bit. Then you can work on those really low notes.

What pied said.

Also, most band music, you'll maybe see one song with that low B. I've heard that modern pieces do make more use of it, but the composers also are aware that not everyone has the low B, plus it's typically at least intermediate-level players that can consistently hit it.

So chances are you'll never see a song with that low B for many years. And if you do, you can either skip it or usually play D instead.

Enjoy your "new" flute. And find a teacher before you develop bad habits. Even a good high school flutist can get you started right.
