New YPC-62 piccolo

Post by sinebar »

I just got a new YPC-62 piccolo that I will probably use to play mostly Irish Trad. As far as I know most Irish and Scottish trad doesn't get very high on the scale. So I have heard some comments here about the YPC-62 not playing in tune in the upper register. How well then does it play in the lower register where most Irish trad will be played?

No particular model of an instrument plays in or out of tune every time. It depends on the individual instrument. That's why it's best to play every instrument before you buy it.

To embellish on what etgohomeok said, it depends on the instrument AND the individual. I have a YPC-62 and find it to have good intonation in all registers. Perhaps not as good as some but probably better than many. I've played it alongside a lot of professional players and received good comments from them on my intonation.

I have a YPC62 as my primary picc, and I love it. I will admit that it isn't the best match for me , but it is still quite good. I don't have any intonation problems. Sometimes the response is a little bit stiff though... But I have heard that the YPC 82 has had the worst reviews in regards to scale and intonation... :/

I can't honestly say from experiance whether that last bit is true or not, but that seems to be the consensus of many flutists I know.

I have a YPC 82. It's good in terms of intonation. It's only problem is high notes above the high Bb (whatever octave number I'm supposed to put beside it).

i've been thinking of buying the YPC-82 but it is very hard to get my hands on one to try out. i have had a chance to look at two 62's one was extremely raw. By raw i mean the wood was very rough and the instrument was not the usually colour it was nearly a rusted light brown colour which i found really put me off buying a 62 the other one i had a look at in another music store wasn't raw but didn't meet my expectations it was dark and flat.

I've seen a scale on the yamaha japan site showing the 82 is much brighter in tone.

could anyone offer an opinion on this?

didn't mean to hijack the thread by the way :P
