I started trying to play a soprano 7-hole plastic thing, a toy really. It was shrill and awful. So I made a low D 6-hole out of pipe. That sounds nice and I can play the lower octave ok, but can't reliably get upper octave. Music is also a bit limited.
So today I popped into a music shop and tried a 'Primo' concert flute.
What a disappointment, it sounded so tinny and hollow compared to the low D. I thought the sound would have some richness to it. It was like a cheap plastic descant recorder.
Would a better quality flute have a better sound, is it the player, or is that just the way metal concert flutes sound?
