embouchure is all twisted?

Post by thesignpainter »

Hello everyone, I've been playing flute for less than a year.
I guess I have what you call teardrop lips so I read online that this might mean that it's normal that my embouchure isn't really centered (?). I have no idea how to explain this (english isn't my first language^^), so please take a look at this photo and tell me if it's a normal embouchure. Of course I'll ask my teacher about it, but it's always good to hear what other people think, and I know it might be hard through a photo but thanks in advance anyway :D

I once saw a set of pictures of embouchure of some of the more famous players around... they were so varied that one had to wonder how they got so good...

While there may be classic 'correct' embouchure types, I'd be more interested to hearing how your tone through the flute range is sounding. If it sounds great, then don't worry about it...

That aside, you probably do need to ask the opinion of your teacher, as they can listen to you playing. If it is affecting your sound, they can suggest adjustments. But failing that, I wouldn't be too concerned.

I would not be concerned at all. As long as it does not effect your playing.

Yes, Phineas is absolutely right!
I'd just add to his comment "As long as it does not effect (negatively) your constant improvement".
BTW, English isn't my first language either, but you are pretty good in explaining things :-)

Thank you for your responses! I feel more calm now, and hopefully my teacher will calm me too :D
And I don't usually use the excuse that english isn't my first language! But when it comes to music and playing I have more trouble, as in everything that I don't hear people talking about in english :P
