I''m 38 years old and recently decided to
learn to play flute - this is something I''ve wanted to do since I was in 5th
grade. I am teaching myself and I''ve purchased and completed my method books
1 and 2 and I''m about 50% of the way through the third, which is the final
book method book. I am able to play everything up to this point with relative
ease (except for some of the extremely high notes); however, this is my
question, since I''m self-taught I don''t have anything to compare to. I
started this process on February 28, 2003, just a little over 1 month ago. Am I
making good progress? Should I be farther along and if so, can you recommend how
I can do this. Thanks.

Dear Vicky, I am not sure which
method books you are using but it sounds like you are doing really great. One
month is really not much time and it seems that you accomplished a lot. Just
keep up the great work! I have only one advice - make sure that you dedicate
enough time and practice to the quality of your sound, because it is equaly
important as the notes that you play (you should ideally have a flute teacher
listen to you and give you some pointers). Best of luck. Damjan

I'm never certain of where I am. I
don't see how you could learn the lessons in 2 1/2 quality method books in 6
weeks, even if you were pretty much doing it full time. Oh you could get through
them, but learn what they can teach you??? You would have to be truly blessed
with talent and time. I would love to hear from some posters that teach if any
of them ever have taken a student through method books at that speed??? I would
guess 3-6 months per book is normal pace. To answer your question without
hearing you play is impossible. I would guess the absence of a trained ear to
let you know if you are doing things well may have wasted much of your time and
that you probably will end up going over the same ground again. If you want a
definitive answer take one lesson and ask the teacher what you need to work on.

Dear Penny, I have a reply to this
message. It was not hard for me in 3 months to start playing a hard song called
Saber Dance that is at 250 Beats per minute and I am playing in the 2-3 flute
book in a series of 5 in 5 months and I have been playing other hard songs like
Phatom Of The Opra and I'm only in Middle School and only been playing for 5
months I have also played a hard song called A Carmen Celebration and much more

under stand. Even though I just started playing my band teacher says I'm one of
the beast flute players we has ever meet in band and that I'm very fast at
learning and I have a great pitch and great sound quility. People learn at
different rates of speed IA I always catch on fast as aposed to my friend it
takes her a little bit of time to under stand so don't be upset if you are't
learing as fast as others and I know you will be great in dew time!!![;)] -Flute
