New flute after hiatus

Post by Pickle »

Hello!

Many years ago I got grade 8 then pretty much stopped playing. I have got a new flute now (Yamaha 312) as an upgrade from my decrepit but much loved 211S, but I wondered if someone can tell me how long it can take to adjust to a new instrument or headjoint?

Full disclosure, it has only been a few days since I started playing again, but I am struggling with low C, C#,D (airy and can hear harmonics) using the new headjoint (solid silver) that are a breeze if I switch back to the gross old plated head joint. I expected the design to be essentially identical between the 211S and 312 except for the base material, but maybe something else is different between these models?

Probably unrelated, but I think I can see a very very subtle deformation in the new solid headjoint around the location of the Yamaha logo...has anyone else got this model that can confirm if this is typical, or it is usually absolutely perfectly cylindrical when you look inside?

I don't believe that there are significant differences between the headjoints of the 211 and 312. As you noted, the 312 has a silver headjoint and the 211 is plated, but I believe that would be the main difference. Did you purchase the 312 new or used? Either way, it is possible that there could be some minor leaks causing the difficulty with the low notes. The low notes are particularly sensitive to any leaks. Do you know another flutist who could try the 312? Also, if you bought the 312 from a music store, ask them to check it for leaks.

Are you also swapping the headjoints between the flutes? That would help determine if the issue is the HJ, body, or combination.

Hi pied_piper,

Thanks for your reply . The instrument is new and I did go back to the shop (to fix a sticky key) and they tried it out. They said it was not leaking and everything looks and sounds good. Turns out the lip plate design is subtly changed between 211S and 312 models other than the metal (details were explained to me) and I just need to adjust to the new one. I shall persevere!
