Key Buzzing

Post by Amateur_Flautist »

I wasn't totally sure what board to post this on, but oh well. The other day I dropped my flute during our parade, and I played it, and everything seemed just fine, but this week I've noticed a buzzing sound sometimes when I play certain notes. I still have the plug in on my g key (I have an open-holed flute), and I think that's what's making the sound because it looks like it might have a little air leak. I was wondering if any of you have had this problem (so I would know if that's what's wrong), and if plugs are all a standard size so that I can just go down to the music store and buy some.

Plugs are pretty standard and can be replaced easily by most music stores. You will need to know the make and model of your flute when you go. However, I would strongly suggest having your flute checked out, especially after having dropped it. There could be a more serious underlying problem that may urn up later on.

I'm taking it in for a cleaning and maintainance check over Christmas break (if they can get it done in under two weeks, which I'm sure they can), so they'll probably catch anything that's wrong. Also, I had my band director give it a quick glance, just in case. But I do think the buzzing is a problem with the plug because it just recently got worn from the drop (you can see where the leak of air is), and I only get the buzzing when my finger isn't all the way on the G key. Thanks for the comments. :)

I had a problem with my key buzzing too. I couldn't figure out what it was and it was driving me crazy. Then one day, i heard a big clunking noise coming out the end of my flute and screws popped out. The problem was that one of the screws holding the pads on was loose and everytime i played notes with that key i'd get a terrible buzzing sound. That could possibly be your problem.

well there's your problem. (btw...do you have an old closed hole flute? because I wouldn't recommend playing a nice flute while marching for 2 reasons: 1) you're outdoors...it's not good for the flute and 2) your beautiful sound won't be heard well, if at all)
