Debussy Syrinx, Hanson Serenade?

Post by flootloop »

are the Syrinx by Debussy and Serenade by Hanson considered to be contrasting pieces? Thanks!

Historically and stylistically, they're quite different. Debussy is Impressionistic, and Hanson is mid-century (Neo-Romantic) American. Is this for an audition? If you'll be playing them unaccompanied for an audition, you may want more contrast than these two pieces provide. Like, say, Baroque (Bach, Handel) and Hanson, or Debussy and Hindemith. :D

I can't even imagine playing Hindemithe and Debussy in the same day.

I've got a crazy student who's currently preparing for a contest Nov. 5. Here's her program:
Milhaud Sonatine, first movement
Bach E-flat sonata
Reinecke Ballade
Schocker Ambidextranata, third movement--this is for left-hand flute and right-hand piano!!
Oh, yeah. She's 15.
