Tchaikovsky Flute Concerto

As some of you may know, the Tchaikovsky flute concerto was recently released. The pages had been scattered across Russia, leaving little more than a rumor of its existence, but it's now been reassembled, and the missing chunks filled in. I've read the flute part through a few times (and it's a very nice piece), but I'm curious to hear it in its complete form, which brings me to my question:

Do any of you know of a recording of this work, with either strings or piano to fill out the rest of the concerto (aside from the one by Fabricciani listed on Fluteworld)?

Sorry... no. I only recently heard that it was finally put together and fully recovered. It does intrigue me however, and I have put it on a list of pieces that I hope to go through soon.

It's an excellent piece, which I would encourage anyone at the proper level to take a look at. I'm programming it this spring for a couple of concerto competitions, but I haven't heard of anyone else performing it.

that sounds sooo cool! I had no idea tchaik had a flute concerto floating around and it was found! where have I been!?! geez...well, I can't wait to hear it. I'm sure it's wonderful!

Where can you get the music? I just glanced at Fluteworld and didn't see it.

You can get it from Falls House Press. Fluteworld didn't have it at convention either, which makes me think the folks at Falls House are keeping it to themselves until some of the interest dies down.

I don't buy into the whole grading system bit (so I won't attempt to assign it a number based on difficulty), but I'll give you my general impressions of it. From a technical standpoint, it's not terribly difficult. It does incorporate a few relatively large jumps between notes, but for a flexible player these aren't anything too difficult. The counting and basic rhythms/time changes are pretty normal (none of the craziness of a modern flute concerto), and there is nothing unusual in either range or techniques (a 3 octave range from C1 to C4 is all that is necessary). However, from a musical/stylistic standpoint, I would say it's a pretty complex piece, which requires a relatively advanced player to pull off. I would say it would take a pretty talented high school player to play it, and a more advanced player to truly do it justice. I should also note that it's a relatively short concerto. I have not timed it yet, but whereas some concerti take 20+ minutes to perform in their entirety, my estimate would place this one at somewhere around 15-17 minutes long.

Thanks. I appreciate the insights. I, too, don't always agree with the rating systems (a lot of it is subjective) which is why I didn't ask what grade it would equate to. I think every player has unique strengths and weaknesses so sometimes I find some of the ratings too high and some too low.
