Muramatsu Flutes

Post by the_noc »

Hi, a friend of mine has a muramatsu flute to sell. Unfortunately, muramatsu flutes have a reputation of being really good or awfully bad. There seem to be no middle range for muramatsu. What i want to know is what should i check when i will try the flute in order to know if it is a nice model. (ex: high E and #F low register etc...???)

Thank you

When buying used instruments, here is what I recommend doing:

1. Check the overall physical condition
2. Find out about it's history [age, when it was last serviced, any damage repaired...etc.].
3. Before playing, check for pad leaks.
4. Test play it. I do all of this when buying a flute [new/used]. Try doing harmonics and getting the third harmonic. [play middle B natural in the staff, and over blow up the octave and then up again to the F#]. Do that chromatically for a few steps. If you can't get it to produce the harmonic and you can on your flute, and no one else can get the harmonic to speak on the flute, then the scale of the flute is not stable. Notes will crack more easily. Then play a wide variety of things.
