Cadenzas for Mozart Concerto No. 1

Hi everyone. I hope this topic hasn't been done too much before, but I searched around and couldn't find anything so I figured I would ask. Does anyone have any favourite cadenzas for this concerto? I was looking up cadenzas for it on fluteworld and was faced with two pages worth of them, with little information on any of them. I've looked around local music stores and haven't been able to find anything, and I would hate to order them without having some idea of whether or not I would like them, so I thought I'd ask for any suggestions that some of you may have. Thanks!

I assume that you are talking about Mozart's Concerto in G major k313...... correct?

I particularly like the cadenza at the end of the edition of this concerto editted by rampal. I also like the one at the end of the edition edited by Galway . Also..... [not sure of who wrote it] I have a recording of this concerto played by the london philharmonic..... the flutist's cadenza on that one is REALLY cool. However, I dont know if he/she was using one of their own cadenza's or someone elses. If I find out who it is, or which cadenza it is, I will let you know.

Try writing your own cadenzas. It's good practice, and it helps develop a feel for the concerto with your personal interpretation.

It's just a thought!

Yes, fluteguy18, that's the concerto I'm talking about. Thanks for your suggestions!

Also, I had considered writing my own cadenza, but if I do it will likely be more of a longterm project. I'd rather have something else to work on now simply because of time constraints, as I'll most likely be performing this piece a couple times next semester. Besides, I'm not sure I really feel competant enough to do that, haha.

I find Rampal's Mozart cadezas to always be fantastic.

I played this last year for solo ensemble, and I wrote my own cadenza (with the help of my teacher)

Heres a recording of the whole thing (the one of me actually at solo/ensemble is much better, but doesn't have the cadenza)

I just looked at my collection of cadenzas yesterday, and there's one thing *I think is really important when choosing or writing your cadenza: Please don't make it- say-- Reinecke style. Romantic cascades of chromatic runs just doesn't suit it. I never write higher that the top note of the concerto, either. The cadenza should not be an attempt of overdoing Mozart's work!

Tilllmetz has been used by a number of people, but I find that too a bit too romantic.

I would have to agree; Rampal's cadenza's are the best I have come across. I used to like the Galway cadenza's but when I showed them to my teacher, he put a huge scratch out of the whole thing, and said "please, go get another one...!" even though it was one week before my jury and I had been planning on playing that cadenza all semester!

I have a question about this piece. For an auditon I am supposed to play "Mozart Concerto in G, first movement exposition" what exactly does that mean. What measures does that include or from where to where is the exposition. Thanks.

to Measure 91 (i.e. after the G to F # trill resolving on a D)

Exposition basically means the opening. It is before the development section.
