Need Help, 2 physical problems while playing

Post by maryquinn13 »

The first is that i get this black tarnish on my chin area after i play, it doesnt matter if i clean it or dont i stull have this aeful black smudge on my face for the rest of the day because i only think to look when someone points it out. How do you stop that?

And also, my mouth waters alot when i play, and it is very frustrating. I cant get some phrases out becasue i have spit coming out of my mouth (gross, im sorry but i had to say it). I am goint to talk to my dr. about and see if theres something i can do to dry my mouth some, but does anyone else have that problem? Its only when i am playing my Flute.

These are two problems that nearly every flute player has struggled with at some point.

A black chin is caused by the pH of your skin reacting with the silver content of the lip plate. The pH of your skin may vary from day to day resulting in some days being worse than others, but you're kind of stuck with your body chemistry. Some people have had luck with placing a piece of tape on the lip plate to avoid skin contact with the silver. The rest of us learn to live with it. You may want to get in the habit of wiping your chin after practice or rehearsal.

Excessive spit is a common problem for less experienced players. It will get better with time. I sometimes still have saliva problems with prolonged technical passages. I try to anticipate by clearing my mouth before a problem spot. But sometimes spit happens.

Hope this helps.

Actually, no. I am not a beginner. I have been playing for 7 years, and this has only just started happening. Excuse you.

Lisa, I don't know if you saw the post by a spammer trying to sound knowledgeable  while including a link to some shoddy products that Maryquinn13 was replying to, but its was deleted and banned, spit happens indeed! :D

Rather late reply, but in regards to the black chin: Sometimes it's not your skin reacting, but rather any cosmetics you may be wearing on your face. Powder foundation in particular tends to cause this.
