My Flute recording with a USB microphone

Post by nevil »

A few weeks ago I had researched the internet on making recordings for youtube using the USB microphone for flute, and surprisingly there was none! I took my chances and bought it anyway, and looks like it has turned out okay.
The flute I have used is a C# Indian Bamboo flute (Bansuri). The tone of the flaute was varied by moving away and close to the mic. Whilst closer to the mic and blowing full throttle, the sound appears to have a very falt and woody sound (more like a wooden sax), and controlled blowing away from the mic gives it more of an ocarina like soft sound. The mic was played in front and above the level of the forehead, and was angled perpendicular to the long axis of the flute. The only modifications made with the software during mixing was to remove some of the hissing sound and get rid of the unwanted low frequencies.
I have copied the link below, and hope it is useful for someone looking forward to record at home.

Not bad. It felt like it was missing a little up where the attack of the sound was, but for a clean recording, that was very well done. I'd suggest dropping the 300 to 500Hz range by about 3dB, and try that. Might affect the woody tone, but will allow more of the attack to present itself maybe... Also, try moving a little back from the mic. There is a thickness in tone that comes from being in close that swamps many of the dynamics. It gives a nice thick sound, but the expense is at the cost of the sparkle.
Look forward to hearing more in the future :)

Nice article. I've worked through a few setups for stages, with various mic types, and this seems to cover most of the results. Thanks for the link :)

I have made another recording and this one sound much better. I am grateful for all the valuable suggestions that had helped me get a better sound quality.
I have posted the link here of the new song I have recorded on the same flute (and the same mic, software etc) as before.... the only difference is that I had followed all the suggestions provided earlier. I was planning to do this months before, but unfortunately I am a master of procrastination.
