College Auditions

Post by composed.in.water »

For part of my audition, I must choose 3 orchestral excerpts from the baxtresser book to perform. I don't know which ones would be best though. Any help?

Also, for my other options, this is what I chose(are they the right way to go?):
  • Two movements from a JS Bach Sonata - e minor movements 1 and 2
First movement of a mozart concerto - Concerto no. 1 in G
One Paris Conservatoire piece from the "Music by French Composers" book - Faure, Fantasie Op. 79
This is for auditions at UNCSA if that helps any.

I don't actually have the Baxtresser book (finally ordered it and waiting to get it!) but I worked on a lot of excerpts in my lessons this last year. These are quite popular and I'm sure at least some of them are in the book. A few that my teacher had me work up were:

Beethoven Leonore Overture
Brahms 4
Mendelssohn Scherzo from "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
Dvorak 8
Bizet Entr'acte from Carmen
Saint-Saems "Voliere" from Carnival of the Animals (Working on this right now and it's tough)

Also, I think your other repertoire choices are nice. They are appropriate for an audition and contrasting in style!

Jennifer Cluff has some links to great audition information on her web site. One could even say it's a treasure trove.
http://www.jennifercluff.com/college.htm

Some particularly good ones are listed there including one article from Jeanne Baxtresser herself:

... and some general ones about college audition preparation:
http://www.larrykrantz.com/audprep.htm

But, don't limit yourself to reading only the ones I listed above. There's a lot more there!!!
