Martinu's First Sonata-- help please

Post by Caroline_Fluter »

Is the eighth note in the first mvmt. of Martinu's First Sonata supposed to *stay* at 200 on the metronome? I've practiced it this way with metronome many times and while it feels comfortable at the beginning, it feels like it would have more momentum if it went faster towards the end.
I have not heard a recording of this.

Any suggestions?

thanks,
---Caroline

Hi, Caroline. I've played the Martinu sonata and I assure you that there is a great deal of room for ebb and flow in the first movement. In addition, your instincts are right about the ending: momentum, and thus speed, are supposed to build up.

A really good recording of this is with Mathieu Dufour, the principal flute of the Chicago Symphony. This CD also has the Prokofiev and Hindemith sonatas on it.

Happy listening, and playing! :)

Thanks for the advice and also for the recording recommendation... I'll have to look into that.

And by the way... nice quote there at the end of your post.

I belive the tempo picks up at the end of the first movement. I'm not at home to look at the music, but there seems to be some indication that there is an increase in tempo.
