dynamics

Post by flutegirl49 »

im trying to improve my crescendos and decresendos and following dynamics and such..

something I've kind of had difficulty with is from medium volume, quickly, but gradually becoming softer.. in particular with the C natural note.. I use vibrato and try to get softer at the same time with a half note and its kind of hard.. the C note is naturally weak note also (right?) so it makes it harder..

im not TERRIBLE at it but i want it to sound really nice.. any tips on improving this? would appreciate ur help thanks!

what i have learned from my private lesson teacher (and to me, she is like God when it comes to playing the flute!!!) she has always said you can emphasize the notes more and it makes it seem more like a crescendo. hope that helped!

An exercise from the junior high years:
1. Choose a comfortable, low note--third-line B, maybe.
2. Play it as a long tone, as long as you can play it.
3. While playing the note, with your best tone, begin as softly as possible, crescendo gradually, to the loudest dynamic you can control, and then decrescendo to the softest dynamic you can reach (try for the whistle tone!).
4. Try this with many notes in different octaves.
5. Repeat several times daily, and try to play more softly and loudly over time. Listen to the tone and pitch, and leave out vibrato initially. :D
