playing high notes

Post by flutegirl49 »

I'm not sure if I had this problem before I got my new flute..

But its so hard for me to quickly change from a high A natural to a high E natural... the note like.. splits or something and plays an even high note..

Is there someway to improve this and master it besides practicing it over and over again? should i practice it really slowly many times or something?

Please help. I am playing this song for an audtion and i need to get it perfect.

The problem you are having is one of the faults of the instrument (split E mechanisms and g donuts are designed to help this problem.) Open G# flutes don't have this problem, but for some reason, the closed G# is standard today.

The solution is to raise your right hand pinkey when you play the E. You need the pinkey down for the A of course, but if you lift your pinkey as you switch fingerings, the E won't crack (it actually wants to stay an A.) Leaving your pinkey off on the E also makes the note a little more flat--since E is usually sharp, many people play E without the pinkey as a standard fingering.
