I agree. The flutes that were mentioned are (in my opinion) nothing alike, neither in sound or response. As you try different flutes, you will notice the sometimes subtle differences in all flutes. Unfortunately, flute making is also a marketing game. When you compare specs on flutes, one may look better on paper than the other, but will it sound better? That is very much up to the individual. When I have a student who is upgrading, I have a list of flutes that I give them just to get them started, but I encourage them to play many others. I will support any decission that a student makes as long as I know they are truly happy with what they bought.
I see so many posts on this topic that I think it is very fair to say that there is no way to truly recommend any particular flute to someone without hearing that person play in person. We can certyainly share past experiences with different flutes, and most definately share our personal favs, but this info is somewhat irrelevant to a person buying a flute. You have to play them to know the differences.
Just my opinion.

Sonare's
I have two students who play on Sonare's and two who play on Yamaha 500 series. Both are comparable in mechanism. The advantage though goes to the Sonare - they're a little more expensive but the headjoints are all handmade Powell - which is quite good. Try it first, but my recommendation over these two choices is the Sonare because of "the tone"...good luck trying...
