Ahhh help :[ I'm in a crisis.
I have solo and ensemble this saturday (today is thursday) and I'm playing Fantaisie by Philippe Gaubert. Recently I spoke to my flute teacher about the tongued triplet run(m.141-147) and she told me I could change them into 2 16th notes if I couldn't triple tongue fast enough. But, I was rehearsing infront of my band director and he told me that I couldn't change the triplets and if I did I would probably get a lower rating. So, now I'm stuck with 2 days to learn to triple tongue very quickly
My band director suggested play that section much slower, but it already slows down there and I don't want to slow down the piece. I have the whole piece down perfectly except for this part. Suggestions? :[

I would personally try to learn it triple tongued. But, seeing as how you only have two days..... go with what your teacher said if that makes you feel more comfortable. You will just have to take the chance of getting a lower score. Really.... it is your call. But, I would either make the change to two sixteenths, or single tongue it, have it slow down, get a small comment about tempo on your score, but still give it your best.

Personally I would advise against trying to triple tongue it in this particular performance. There's more to developing the ability to triple tongue well than just getting it up to speed, and realistically, the chances of you being able to to that in 3 days are not high at all. I would opt either to change the rhythm (though it goes against my better judgement, in this case it's one of the lesser of 3 evils) or slow the tempo back. In trying to triple tongue, you'll likely be exposing yourself to a dirty articulation, slower tempo, and some unevenness rather than just a slight change in time, which to me seems like it would eliminate trying to triple tongue as a possibility. For future competitions, I would be sure to select repertoire that you know you have the technique for, or work on anything that is lacking sooner than 3 days in advance.DivaricationOfMind wrote:well, I've decided to go with the triple tonguing, I don't have it as fast as it should be but, I'm sure it won't be that big of an issue(hopefuly). well, I'm not going to go beyond my limits. The fastest I can triple tongue is the fastest I can do it without ruining articulation or anything like that.
I've been practicing this piece for a good 6 or 7 months, I've just been looking at the runs and other technical aspects of the piece. It wasn't untill recently that I played with a metronome and realized that I couldn't play the triplets in time. I realize my mistake and will definitely be more prepared next time.

this is probably not the best way, but if it were me id probably double tongue, TKT KTK TKT etc. i know its not natural and awkward, but if it were me id rather do that then learn triple tonging in 2 days. i know im already confident in double tonging, and id feel more confident playing that run. Just me though!

Actually, that is a method of triple tonguing. really?? I didnt know that! I figured it would be so out of place to everyone else. lol. but, i find my tongue hates TKT TKT. so, if i ever need to, id probably do TKT KTK. at first i thought triple tonguing might actually be TKP, the P being using your lips to start the sound. lol.
