So, I just finished Mozarts Andante in C Maj and I need to pick a new piece. My flute teacher wants me to try to find one myself, but I don't even know where to start. We are preparing it for college auditions, and I need something "standardly" played at auditions, but something that is unique enough that not everyone will play it. You know? Please help!

maybe bloch's suite modale? i'm not sure what level you are at, but if you just finished the andante in c major, i think the suite modale would be okay for you. the thing about contemporary pieces is most of them are very much more difficult than other pieces, especially technically, and with regards to tone colors, and artistry too. There is the debussy syrinx but that is definitely not a piece that "everybody else will not be playing".. good luck and i hope you find the right piece for you!

Perhaps you could try out La Flute de Pan? I'm not sure how common it is, but it's certainly difficult enough for college audtions. Although if you're a baroque music lover, the french music may not be for you. There are lots of solos out there to choose from, looking on jwpepper.com might help narrow your search. I would say to stay away from Mozart Concerto's for your "unique" piece, but some of those are required to play anyway.
One modern piece I know of is Duo for Flute and Piano by Aaron Copland.
