wood piccolo?

Post by Flute_1991 »

I'm currently using a wood piccolo and it is starting to get a brown tint to it. I was wondering if it was possible to put anything on it to preserve it in anyway...

thanks!

You should not apply anything to it. The only thing that goes on wood instruments is an occasional bit of oil in the bore to prevent the absorption of moisture. The brownness will not affect how the piccolo plays (it's just the true color of the wood coming through), but applying a preservant to it very well could. It's not worth the risk of damage, as this is purely cosmetic (and in my mind, not even a problem cosmetically).

I believe that I was told of a certain type of polish that I could use on the headjoing of my picc, which was grenadila wood. However, this was 10 years ago. It is possible that polishing any part of a picc has fallen out of practice. Also, I was told that it should be polished only for purposes of keeping the wood hydrated.

In any event, if this is something you are seriously considering, you should only do it under the guidance of a tech who is trained in working with grenadila wood instruments.

I use the same methods that clarinetists use to preserve thier wooden instruments because they are typically the same kind of wood.

One thing they do is use the bore oil, and lightly wipe it down to keep the wood hydrated. I have done this, and the results were very satisfactory. However, I was taught how to do this, so I would seek advice of someone who is knowlegeable and who can help you the first time around the block.
