getting a new flute. PLEASE HELP ME !

i am currently in 8th grade right now
played since 4th grade.
At band, i am 1st chair out of 25 flutes.
So my flute teacher recommended me to get a open hole.
I currently use a YAMAHA 211
Should i upgrade to a high-level
(Such as MURAMATSU EX) or
middle-level
(Such as YAMAHA 574H)

My first piece of advice is to do a search on this message board for a thread called FAQ. Open the 1.0 or 1.1 [if it goes up soon] edition, and read the entire thing first [because even though it is very structured, there are bits of advice everywhere that might help you out].

Secondly, my advice is to get your hands on as many flutes as you can to try out. Many music stores will allow you to test the instrument before you purchase them either in the store, or might even let you do a trial period at home. So, I believe that would be the first actual direction to go.

then, consider your budget and your goals as a musician. Are you only wanting to play in school and then when you graduate, play for a hobby? Are you going to become a music major, and later a performer?

IF you are only going to play in high school, then an intermediate model [such as the Yamaha you mentioned, or a Pearl, or various other similiar flutes] should do the job. IF you are considering becoming either a music major or minor, I would suggest saving your money a little longer, and upgrade to a higher model [like the Muramatsu EX or a Miyazawa 101 or any similiar handmade silver plated model]. So, right now, I suggest that before you do any serious money spending look at all of your options, and look very carefully at what you want to do with music.

But, just remember the golden rule: Test EVERYTHING you can before you begin making a decision.

im thinking of minoring flute so i think muramatsu will do the job =)

I agree with fluteguy... test everything. When I set out to purchase a new flute in college (as a music major)... I tried out Yamaha, Muramatsu, Miyazawa, and Prima Sankyo. I kind of just threw Yamaha in there because I had a nice student model at one time, so I just thought I'd see what the upper lines were like. My teacher covered the labels and had me play on each, for several days... I never knew which flute was which. It was obvious which flute was going to be mine. I was really surprised when it was revealed that it was a Yamaha.

I thought for sure because I was looking for something "professional" that I'd end up with the Muramatsu. But it just so happened the Yamaha gave me the voice and colors I was looking for. So definitely try out all of the models you are thinking about, and do a blind test so you aren't swayed by what you think you "should" get. Because when getting a new flute, especially one you're going to be with for a long time, it's so important to get what works for YOU.
