Muramatsu Tsubasa Head Joint

Post by atoriphile »

I recently got to try a new Muramatsu DS with the Tsubasa head joint. For me, it made the low notes pop out a lot easier and made the tone more focused.

A picture of the Tsubasa head joint is available at the Muramatsu America site:

Has anyone else tried this head joint? What did you think?

I havent tried that specific type of headjoint, but I have played similiar designs [David Williams headjoints with the wings for example]. I like them, but I like to have more variety in tone color. So, they feel a little too directed and focused to me. But, that is just my playing style.

I agree with Fluteguy. The Tsubasa is basically a modified winglip headjoint....The basic idea is the same. I have never liked winglip heads because they do have a limited range of tone colors, and as I like to be able to control where my air is going so I can control exactly what I'm getting out of the flute, having the winglip direct it for me isn't particularly interesting to me. For doublers or those who don't have the time to spend building an embouchure to the same degree that a straight flutist might, I could see the Tsubasa as a benefit, but it didn't fit me very well.
