I am thinking about purchasing a new flute. I have an Armstrong 103 open
hole, which I like, however I would like to purchase a flute with a gold lip
plate. I was thinking of an Armstrong 78. What is your opinion on an Armstrong
flutes and what would you recommend? Thank you. Jackie

Try di Medici, made by Altus. They are the beginner
professional line manufactured by Altus Flutes. Altus Flutes also manufactures
Jupiter brand flutes but do not mistake di Medici flutes for Jupiters. They
truly are professional flutes at a bargain price. You might also want to check
out Pearl flutes. They can be a bit heavy in the mechanism, but other than
that... But of course that's just my opinion.

Not familiar with the Armstrong 78. But in general I am not a
fan of the Armstrong. But if you are pleased with your current Armstrong by all
means keep them on your list. First what price range are you shopping in? I am
guessing sub $2000. Why a gold lip plate? A must? Try a few other brands most
can be ordered with gold lip plates. Yamaha has an Allegro line that comes with
a gold lip plate and is of higher quality than the Armstrong. Gemeinhardt's
with gold lip plates are plentiful and probably a good comparison to Armstrong.
Stay away from Jupiter, Emerson, Selmer, Blesing, Buffet etc. in my view.
DeMedici which is an upgrade Jupiter is a decent flute but price shop them (most
flutes in this range can be purchased at least 30% off retail if you look) as
they may not be worth the premium price depending on your plans. But DeMedici
are definetly well made bodies if the headjoint works for you, I find it
lacking. It looks like they saved dollars on the headjoint to achieve a price
point. Try a Sonare it comes in at about 1500 and has a better headjoint, the
Powell signature ($800) but again it has to be right for you. Not sure if you
can order it with gold lip plate. I was not impressed with the Pearl student
line or the Maestro ($6000) but can't comment on the moderate priced ones. Some
of the less known names like Dean Yang and Trevor James are worth checking out.
I have heard good things about both but have not heard or seen either. Last and
most importantly you need to try for yourself. Nothing replaces your and your
teachers ear and feel. Stay with a respected brand and you are likely to be
happy with your flute. Be realistic about why you want to upgrade. If you have
grand plans for your future you will need to upgrade again anyway and if you
have modest plans your upgrade will probably not make much difference. Don't
forget used, plenty of parents with fine instruments that little Jenny bailed on
for one reason or another. Expect to pay 40-60 cents on the dollar for a like
