Probably obscure Gemeinhardt key interchangability question

Post by moondaddy »

Would an offset G# key from a 1988 closed hole C foot instrument (undetermined Gemeinhardt model) fit on a 1966 open hole B foot instrument (M3) that had an inline G (cup now broken off)?

Maybe. But... probably not. Flute parts aren't generally interchangeable.

I would say no. These two flutes are made with very different specs. Also, the assemblies for inline/offset are made differently.

Yeah, probably not. But if you have the broken parts, a good tech can silver solder it back together.

Interchangable Parts

My guess would be YES, but I would contact Gemeinhardt or a professional that can handle that task professionally before I take any chances.

You may be able to order parts from Gemeinhardt, but from my experiences, the new flutes are so different that even if you ordered a new key assembly part, it would not fit. Your best bet is to have it soldered back on by a tech. If the key is lost, try to find a flute that was made the same year/model for parts. I have several flutes lying around that I sometimes use for parts.

Back in high school, I once tried to make a "Franken-flute." There were two old Bundys just sitting in a locker. Neither of them worked. I took a close look, and they were the same model. Exactly [with the exception that one had an "N" at the end for nickel plating and one had an "s" for silver].

Anyway. I took them apart and started to transfer keys from one flute onto the other. Everything worked except the upper and lower G keys. The hingetube fit between the posts, but the steels wouldn't fit. They were either too big to go through the new key, or the threads were too small to go into the different post.

Oh well. Sorry for the random/ semi related comment. I just remembered it and couldn't help but share. :)
