Telemann 12 Fantasies - Which Edition?

Post by ParLawGod »

Hello - I was not 100% sure where to post this question, so I'm hoping I have the correct forum.

I am a trombone graduate student and will be performing one of the Telemann 12 Fantasies on my graduate recital in a few months. I've been told that the trombone edition "butchers" a lot of things. I've listened to a few flute recordings, and the trombone edition sounds completely different stylistically. I am looking to get a flute edition of the Telemann and make some changes so when I play it it sounds correct stylistically.

My question, which edition of the Telemann is usually considered "better"? I'm sure there is debate on that subject, but was just wondering everyone's thoughts on it.

Thanks!

Typically I would recommend trying to get an "Urtext" edition and not an editted edition.

I personally own the Barenrieter Urtext edition, but I have seen others out there.

Try the Baerenreiter edition, it's excellent with little to no editing, so the interpretation is totally up to the performer.
