Rampone and Cazzani

Post by Flutterfly »

Has anyone ever seen these flutes or know much about them?

I saw one used and the previous owner (a senior citizen) said it's vintage...

I'm hoping to check it out this weekend... but was wondering if anyone knew if it was worth it...

Rampone & Cazzani is an Italian instrument maker. Their history dates to the late 1800s and early 1900s. They are still making instruments, but now saxophones are their emphasis. If the flute is in good condition, it might be worth buying, but if it needs a lot of work, then you'll have to decide if it is worth it to you. Consider the price to buy it and then have repairs done, if needed.

They made some very beautiful flutes with ornate engraving. Here's one example: http://web.fmarion.edu/goferjoe/rampone.htm

Here's one of their later instruments (circa 1980?): http://alpha1.fmarion.edu/goferjoe/racamd.htm

Here's one that sold in 2002 on UsedFlutes.com: http://www.usedflutes.com/2002_page88.shtml

Here's the current Rampone & Cazzani website: http://www.ramponecazzani.it/static/english/index.htm

As with any vintage flute, be careful of the tuning. If you can try it, take along a tuner to check the pitch and intonation to see if it will meet your needs.

Glad to be of help, but you'll really have to thank Google for those links!

Thanks for the information.

I used Google when I first considered purchasing the instrument and found several of the links. The flute with the engraving looks very nice.

Apparently this one isn't as old as I had anticipated. When I called the guy he said it was about 20 years old...

The pictures are kind of small, but I don't think there is any engraving on the lipplate.

I'm torn as to whether or not I should get it - it's only $135, but if it's just a random silver plated flute I'm not so sure...
