Cleaning case outer fabric

Post by wally »

I have a Jupiter flute case, French-style, that is a nice and clean red velvet on the inside but the outer, synthetic black leather surface feels sticky and needs cleaning. I tested the usual degreasers (Zippo lighter fluid as well as isopropyl alcohol) in a couple of spots but the cloth quickly picks up a black residue which I assume is some sort of dye, so I think I don't want to be making matters worse....

Should I just use a traditional wax (shoe polish?) and buff procedure? This surface appears to be some sort of impregnated fabric, not leather. I recall dealing with this once before on an older Yamaha pro flute case.
