Clarinetist looking to purchase first flute
Hi guys, I've recently finished my clarinet performance degree and I'm now looking to learn the flute, both out of personal interest and to make myself more marketable as a teacher. What would you recommend for someone who hopes to teach and hopefully do some occasional doubling work? I'm personally more inclined to look at the intermediate and semi-pro ranges based on my experience with clarinets. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, don't know how I missed that. In general what I'm after is an instrument that will serve me well over a number of years.
I've been looking at the Yamaha 371 and 471 but from what I can see the only real difference between them is the 471 has a Stirling Silver body as opposed to silver plating on the 371. From what I've read it seems that their won't be too much difference in the sound between them as the head-joints are essentially the same.

I don't have any personal experience with the Yamahas, but both of those models have a good reputation. I'm also a doubler, (Sax, flute, clarinet). While in college, I started with an old Artley, then later got an Armstrong Model 80, and finally upgraded to a Muramatusu AD about ten years ago. If you get bitten by the flute bug, you'll probably want to upgrade at some point, but either the 371 or 471 should serve you well for years to come.

I do have the Yamaha 471 and I'm in love with it! It's an awesome flute. The price was a little steep for me, but the money was well worth it. I love this flute. I got it last month. I definetly upgraded. The flute is perfect. I hope you get the flute you like and I hope I helped out!
