Is it a flute?

Post by mightywind »

Would any one Know where to start with this?
It was made by CC.Werner Leipzig
I thought it was a clarinet, But someone told me it was not.
Looks really old almost 100 years?, made in Germany. Possibly Ivory and Boxwood. one large crack and a split ring, ebony mouth piece.

Your instincts were right. It is a clarinet.

It appears to be a baroque or classical period clarinet. These were the forerunners of the modern clarinet. If it's a genuine original (as it's condition and markings would seem to indicate) and not a replica, it would have likely been made between 1750 and 1820. Its value depends upon its condition, its age, and the maker. Your best bet would be to try to find an expert in antique instruments and have it appraised.

I found one book reference to clarinets made by CC Werner of Leipzig Germany:

Here's a few links to some actual baroque/classical clarinets as well as some modern replicas.

Does it have more finger holes on the bottom? It looks a lot like a Shawm or a Chalumeau. A shawm however is a double reed instrument.

It looks to me like it could have been any one of the odd cross-over instruments between the chalumeau and the modern day clarinet.

Thank you for the information, It is certainly original.
it also looks like there is at least one hole on the bottom, maybe four.
but it is a signal reed.
