Stuck Headjoint Tool Suggestion

Post by jmdewey60 »

I just got a flute in the mail that I bought on EBay,
earlier today and had taken it to the shop to get
the head joint tightened. When I got home and went
to put it together it did not seem to want to go in
so I tapped it in. I was careful about it but I think
now that if it gets to that point, then it may be better
to stop and try to find out what's wrong, instead of
forcing it.
Later on, when I wanted to take it apart to check and/
or adjust the cork stopper, I could not get the thing to
budge. I knew from my reading that you do not use the
mouthpiece to grab, because it is soldered on and you
can break it. I assumed also you would not want to use
the key mechanism for a handle, either. So you are not
left with a lot of room for grabbing onto. I decided I needed
some sort of mechanical device to assist me to get a grip
on one end or the other. I looked around at the tools I had
lying about, handy from a recent car repair job. Here's what
struck me as being suitable:

It's called a tube spring lock coupler tool. These can be had
at your local auto parts store and they are for taking apart
air conditioning lines. The nice feature is they have a hinge
on one side so it opens to clip onto a tube. They are color
coded, with white identifying the 3/4 inch nominal size.
Open it up and clip it onto the tube, between the mouthpiece
and the body, and rest it up against the little lip at the body
end. Grip the tool in your hand so it does not open. Pull away
with your other hand on the tube. That should give you enough
grip to pull it out, without wrecking your nice flute.
Well, it worked for me, so I wanted to share that experience.

RE the stuck headjoint suggestion: I strongly urge that everyone NOT try that at home!

1 - If the headjoint won't go in easily, don't force or tap it in. Headjoints can easily be damaged doing this. Take the flute and headjoint to the shop and have the tech adjust it for proper fit.

2 - If the headjoint should get stuck, don't try to remove it with any type of clamps, pilers, vise, etc. You are only likely to do damage to your flute, and the repair costs will be far greater than the cost to have a pro remove it and adjust it.

If it is really stuck then do as pied_piper suggests.
My method is for a situation like mine where you just took
your flute to a professional repairman and he tightened it
to where you would be seriously tempted to grab the lip
plate in one hand and the key rods with your other.

Even if that were the case, I would still do what pp suggested and I would also not stick a shotgun metal cleaning rod up my flute either.

In that case, you should still take it back to the repair tech and give him/her the chance to correct the misadjustment.

jmdewy,

I think we are talking about two opposite ends of the spectrum.

You and your eBay "finds" versus our $10K - 30K flutes. Like pp said, I personally would not
mess with either of my flutes and would have only Brannen or experienced flute techs (not even the local techs) work on them.

Right, and I am lucky to get anything done.
I already have a certain degree of hostility towards me at my local music store. Yesterday, I went in and there were three people, obviously as a group, standing there in the isle and they moved back to let me pass. I took their demeanour to indicate they were acquiescing to me while they were just sort of idling. As the tech walked by, I handed him a flute case. He went in the back with it. Meanwhile the people who had been standing there walked out, and outside behaved in an agitated manner before driving off. The guys working there got mad at me for not behaving properly. When the tech came back with the flute, I asked him about the one I dropped off a week ago. He said he was swamped, and he knew I had another flute that was nice. (as if i should not need another one so soon)
Not too thrilled about going back into that environment before they call me to pick up my other flute.
Yes there is a big difference between a $250 and a $20,000 flute and how you make decisions about how to deal with a seemingly minor problem.

Could the group in the store have been waiting for the repairman and you jumped the line?
