New Gemeinhardt or used Selmer

Post by maggiekbs »

Hi,

I have the opportunity to buy out my daughter's rental flute or a new Gemeinhardt 2SP flute on Amazon for about the same price. The rental is a 2008 Selmer FL600 and has been maintained by a long established instrument shop. Any recommendations?

Thanks for any help,
Maggie

Selmer has a nice sound.. And if a flute is kept well you can play for many years on it.

While [insert online third party relatiler here] is good for flute music, flute cleaning supplies, flute accessories, and the like, I wouldn't buy a flute online. In my opinion, there's too much margin for damage to the flute, and returning is sometimes a hassle.

Selmer flutes DO have a nice sound.
I own a used Gemeinhardt 2SP, and I love(d) it. If your daughter has a chance to try a Gemeinhardt for herself, it may aid in the flute-buying process. Over time, however, the tone does get worse. I'm not sure if that was on my part, or just the flute.

If those are the only two options you have, then I personally would stick with the Selmer. Buying online can often be a disappointing hassle if you're not dealing with a company like Fluteworld (or similar). But, if you have other options, I personally would not buy either of them. While neither of them are poor choices there are certainly better options in the student flute market. Selmer and Gemeinhardt are merely the most popular because of how heavily they have been marketed over the past 20+ years to school students.
