I have a Yamaha 674 in the mail. I am worried I will be disappointed. Has anybody compared it to the 800 series flutes? I played an 800 series about 5 years ago and it was great. I never played a 600 series. I owned a 300 series and I was disappointed with the mechanism and the tuning. I owned a 384, I think. It was so long ago. I think the bodies have changed. Any opinions or should I just wait and see?
Right now I have a Muramatsu EXIII.

To be honest I would never change my Mura EXIII for any Yammy. But that's just me.
I'm sure you'll have the correct feeling when you come to play them side by side.
Though I still bet my dimes on the Mura...

I got the Yamaha yesterday. I took it to Wind Ensemble last night. I played it and I liked it.
I took it to my flute teacher today and she said wow. She thinks I sound better on the Yamaha than my Muramatsu. The sound is brighter and lighter and I think some of the high notes are better on the Yamaha.
Complaints about the Yamaha: Some of the keys are to high. The C# trill is very high off the body of the flute. The gizmo key is very high off the body and very far away. It is quite a stretch. I have small hands, but it's almost ridiculous how far the key is from the body of the flute. I feel like I am trying to play an octave on a piano. It's a good thing I don't use the gizmo for anything. I just stick my pinky up on the low B roller and close the key. The flute I had growing up was pre gizmo. lol
I am going to keep the flute. I am going to take it to my flute tech and have him adjust the keys a little. Maybe he can bring the C# trill down a little. I know that the flute is leaking slightly.
All in all, I am really surprised that I like the sound of the flute. They keys have nice action. The tuning of the flute is so much better than the old 384 I had 5 years ago. I am still using my Drelinger headjoint with this flute but I did quite well with the EC headjoint. I didn't try my Muramatsu head because I haven't played it in years.
I am selling my Muramatsu, but I have plans on getting another one in a few years. Right now, this Yamaha is going to work well for me. The flute fair is next month and I heard that Muramatsu will be there. I am definitely planning on trying some of their solid silver flutes with a C# trill. It could just be that I sound better on solid silver flutes.

for me i would never choose a yamaha over a muramatsu, but at the same time we all have our own preferences. and also your point about silver flutes is important - you might really looove solid silver muramatsus (or other makes)! or not

I keep my flute tuned up. I take it to the flute tech once or twice a year. I know how to check for leaks. The Muramatsu is not leaking. I am having it tuned up later this month and I will play it one more time to make sure.
Maybe it's the split E. I have no idea. I just sound a lot better on the Yamaha. I am a little disappointed, because I still love my Muramatsu, but I guess it doesn't love me as much as I love it.
