New flute (cibali)

im thinkinga about buying a new flute and this one caught my eye

ive heared mixed reviews about the brand so I wasn't sure

two of my friends own the same type of flute and they play quite well and the only problem I could see with them was one's paint was starting to come off (after about 3/4 years)

at the moment I am hiring a yamaha q-class q1 from my school at a pretty good price but i am looking to buy my own so would that flute be ok or is it a bit dodgy?

Cibali is not a well respected brand. I've heard several repair tech say that they work OK at first, but then begin to develop problems. Many flute techs won't even work on them because they are made from softer metal. This means that it is difficult to keep the keys in proper alignment. Also, if a key gets slightly bent, it will frequently break when they try to straighten it.

You'd be better off sticking with a well-known brand either new or used. See the FAQ. It has lots of good info about buying a good dependable flute.

You are better off to keep renting the Yamaha. It is a far better flute. Again. stick with reliable brands. The problems that arise from poorly constructed flutes usually happen after about a year of playing and can affect that player in many ways, including producing bad habits as a way of coping with poor adjustment without even knowing it.

the seller had pretty good feedback and the only reason I really wanted that flute in particular is because i dont want to hire my flute anymore and one that was about 3 years old taht I played made quite a nice sound....

and cause it was black and silver lol

I wouldn't recommend the cibali either my next door neighbour bought his daughter one of those cheap and nasty flutes and the sound is awful everytime she plays it its like someone killing something its awful. I would stick to a reputable brand such as yamaha or buy an armstrong or another reputable brand. do your self a favour and not go down the cheap and cheerful path.

I'm not keen on yamaha myself but i think you would be much better off with that then the cibali.

Anyhow, I am not attacking your post about "everytime she plays it, its like someone killing something". On a saxophone, or a clarinet maybe. But I would be terrified if someone could make a flute sound that bad...lol

I wish i could say it is impossible to sound that bad on a flute but it isn't i have heard worse sad to say from my school days either take an instrument or play sport.

Its a crime against humanity the only reason she is playing is to get through school it is compulsory to play recorder or they can opt to play the flute instead (didn't exist when i was going through school). Parents gave in to her. You can guess the rest.... last time she was practicing she got sentenced to the back yard at 7am on a saturday morning i wasn't amuzed.

I'm very tempted to put a flyer in their mailbox offering to teach her for free so that i don't have to put up with such bad sounds coming from next door, i don't think it would help much she had a piano teacher who used to do house calls he quit in disgust.

I bought a new Ciabili for our 11 Y O girl. she played it for a short time then one of the pads went out of alignment.

We took it to our local music store and he repaired it for $25 Au.

It has played perfectly well ever since. I don't think it sounds beautiful like a yamaha but it was good for her to learn on and she now wants a guitar anyway.

My advice, keep renting the Yamaha, learn it really well, save $600 and buy a new Yamaha.

If you want a good cheap new nickle plated flute for a beginner then go for the Cibaili. Your child will be very excited and
you won't have to pay a second mortgage if she drops it etc.

If you want to be a professional musician, buy professional equipment. If you just want to learn to play the Cibaili is really OK and could be cheaper than renting.

I agree with what most of the members stated, it is not a recommended flute for beginners. Most pros wouldn't touch a Cibaili flute (unless they wanted a lamp), but that doesn't mean that they're good for beginners. Find a used flute that is a good brand like Yamaha, Emerson, Jupiter, Pearl, etc. Go to http://www.fluteworld.com to familiarize yourself with good brands

One of the reasons sellers of these (and other) flutes have good feedback is that in many cases, the initial reaction is a nice sounding, inexpensive instrument. The problems usually start to show up later on (after a few months).
