Hello ,
I got a second hand flute from ebay again ,a Buffet Crampon 228,described in "Excellent condition" and I'm very pleased with it.I am also very confused.
the engraving on the main body (largest) reads
Buffet Crampon
Cooper Scale
ARC
E
(The head of the flute has engraved 228 ).
Now I'm very much confused about the E meaning ....is the flute's scale E ?
It certainly has the same dimensions with my Trevor James 10x ,and I cannot understand how to almost identical -in physical terms like lenght and diameter - items can be pitched differently...
Really sorry to ask such a -rather silly - question here ,but ,to my confusion ,there are selling adds for Buffet Crampon 228 that advertise it as an E scale flute ....

Hi,
I own a Reynold Eb flute and the difference between one of my c-flutes is quit obvious (link). What I have seen, with my limited experience, Eb flutes tend to have the footjoint attached to the body. Maybe you can post a picture?
The fasted way is play a “C” and see what your tuner says, or go wild and play the whole scale.
Good luck,
Ilse

Hi sonicapogee..
I currently have the same flute of brand and type you have. But I can't find the "E" designation anywhere on mine.
I am a beginner, but so far I can tell you that the flute is pitched in C. Yeah, a normal flute...

It is likely a C flute with the split-E mechanism. Check the FAQ for the technical explanation, but it makes the third octave E natural easier to play.

If it's true that you're having a standard, non-modified 228 model, the flute doesn't come with split E mechanism, AFAIK.
A way to check whether it has a split E or not is to look at the area where the "phalanx Bb" lever lies. If you find a little rod perpendicular to the tube, connected to the lower twin G key, then your flute is likely to have a split E mechanism.

Do you mind if i asked how much you paid for it on ebay?
I have exactly the same model which I am looking to sell but really have no idea how much it is worth.
