Bb to Eb Trill on first Bb above stave to first Eb above

Post by purpleflute »

Been given star wars epic part II by John Williams arranged by robert W Smith to learn for band. In the star wars main title part there is a Bb to Eb trill on the first Bb above the stave to the first Eb above the stave. Have been looking on flute trill charts but can only find trills on either single notes or notes that are next to each other. How do you play this trill?

The reason you cannot find a trill fingering for Bb to Eb is because it is not a trill. This is more accurately described as a tremolo. See this reference for a complete description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremolo

Now, to answer your question about how to finger those notes rapidly, is this similar to what you see in your music?

For some tremolos, there is no alternative to using the normal fingering for each note, but try fingering Eb and "trilling" your LH 2 & 3 fingers as indicated by the red dots...

I don't have my flute with me at the moment, but when I get home I'll try it to verify that it works.
