New flute?

Howdy ya'll, I don't play the flute myself but I was wondering if you guys could help me find my girlfriend a gift. She's to the point now where's she's one of the best flute players in the part of the state and outplays many people and I figured I'd like to show my support by getting her a new flute. My question is, which brands are good to look out for in the $500 range? Also do any of you have any specific models that you'd recommend?

What is she currently playing? (make and model, if possible).

Actually, a better approach might be to take her into a decent music shop and get her to try out some flutes. There is some variation depending on lip shape, etc. And fair warning: the $ range you're talking about might be a challenge if she is playing at a high level already. If she is currently playing on a decent instrument, then getting it overhauled for her might also be an option (if it hasn't been serviced for some time...)

She's playing more of a no-name Ebay find really. I was just thinking that something with a reputable name engraved on it might be a nice gift to her for next Christmas. I'm honestly not sure what level she's on either. As much as I'd love to take her to a shop, all there really is up here are guitar stores.

How long has she been playing? Is she studying with a flute teacher? The no-name flutes vary greatly in quality. Some are not bad but many are poorly constructed. Often, they play well enough at first, but will go out of adjustment easily because they are made from softer metal.

The FAQ lists a number of known, reliable brands. However, as the previous reply indicated, finding a good intermediate level flute for $500 will be a challenge. Also, I agree that the best approach is to visit a music store and have your girlfriend try a few flutes. Alternatively, deal online with one of the reputable music stores listed in the FAQ. For a trial fee, many will ship you 2-3 flutes to try at home for two weeks. At the end of the trial period, you return them or choose one to purchase.
