Hi all~ It would appear as though this board is moving a
lot more slowly than it used to due to some people fighting and leaving and
whatnot. I really don't know too much about that, but hopefully us remaining
can share our worldly knowledge and help each other out.[:bigsmile:] Anyway, my
post: So my question is this...does anyone know anything about Sankyo flutes?
(Is it Prima Sankyo or just Sankyo?) Several people in my area have them and
seem to like them, and I am considering getting a new flute. I would appreciate
any information anyone could give me. Thanks much![:)]

I noticed this board moving slowly as well-- I wish it
wasn't the case. I don't know anything about Sankyo flutes-- I don't think
any local music stores sell them here, and I don't know anyone who has one.
BUT... I went the website (www.sankyoflute.com) and they look like very nice
flutes. Of course, that's what the website is supposed to convey [;)] Then I
went to FluteWorld to see approximate prices and was astounded! They certainly
are expensive. I know sometimes it's a "get what you pay for" type thing, but I
really don't know if that's true or not with this brand. Now that I've
rambled... can you try out one? Borrow one from the music store? Borrow one from
your friend? Even if it's a fabulous flute for X professional player, and it
made your best friend make first chair... it might not work for you. You
probably already know this, but there's no harm in being reminded [:p] Try it
out and see if you like it. Then let us know what you thought!!!

I love my Sankyo! Of course I tried out other flutes too,
but this one just fit me perfectly. Like the previous person said, try out many
flutes.. as many as you can, and you will find one that suits you.

your Sankyo from your comment... what kind do you have? Do you have a custom

I have a Sankyo Artist model. I didn't get a custom head
joint, but it came with one that I really love.. I forget what it's called, but
it has a slight bend in the lip plate. I've had my flute since this past
summer.. have literally been saving for years!!! It was around $5,000.. but very
much worth it. I never really had the money for a good flute when I was in
college, and now that I have a little bit of money, I really wanted to invest in
a good flute. I have been ready for a professional-quality instrument for
several years. I got my flute from the Woodwind/Brasswind company, but would NOT
recommend it.. I had a LOT of trouble with the people there. They screwed up my
order several times. I know that lots of people have had good experiences with
them, but I guess I was just not as lucky. I've heard really good things about
fluteworld though. Hope that helps! [:)]

Sankyos...but I think I'd like to try one out before committing (even though
you've had a really good experience with them.) So far, nobody has had any

I play a Sankyo Silversonic model (Artist that Emily has
is better, though). It is a really great flute, with good intonation and a good
mechanism. I bought it used for $3000 but this model runs for about $4000. It
has a winglip headjoint. If I could pick (had some extra money), I would not get
a winglip (although it has a great sound), since it prevents me from completely
doing some pitch-drops and other effects I like to produce. I would also get a
thicker wall to give it a little darker and fuller sound, especially in the
lower register. Otherwise, the flute is very responsive, especially in the high
register. Like it very much so I do not think you will go wrong with it. You
should see if you could try testing it out before you buy it. At that level,
every flute is different and with two of the same model you might find you still

im sittin nxt 2 sum1 with a sankyo flute at the moment
(i've got a yamaha lol) and i asked her wot she thought and she said "its ok"
lol i think if i'd spent 2000 pounds on a flute i'd want it 2 b a little bit
better than ok bt she says she loves it [:)]

yaaay i bought one!
Well, I'm now the proud owner of a Prima Sankyo Artist model flute! 
I got a really good deal on it and I compared it with one of the Pearl Preferred flutes...the Sankyo just seemed to be much more powerful and while the Pearl had a very dark, almost stuffy sound, the Sankyo seemed more versatile and really well-built. I love it
