Alto flute - desired and avoidable makes please!

Post by Spencer »

Hey all

i'm looking to purchase an alto flute. I was wondering if anyone here knows any particular makes or models to AVOID as i keep seeing cheap ones on eBay. Parrot, i think they are, for about 300 at a time whereas TJ and buffet ones start closer to 1000.

The best resource for information about alto and bass flutes is Chris Potter. She is the chair of the low flutes committee of the National Flute Association and has a website with lots of good information about alto & bass flutes:
http://www.chrispotterflute.com/altobass-resources/

For your purposes, see her recommendations for purchasing an alto flute:

Another consideration is whether you get an alto flute with a straight head, a curved head, or both. Larger players can do well with a straight head while many smaller players may find it uncomfortable to play. Smaller players often need with a curved head for playing comfort. If the alto flute will be played in a group and shared with multiple players, it may be best to get a flute with both styles. See this article for other considerations:

I hope that helps.

In terms of what brands to look for, my personal two favorites are the Pearl and the Black Nickel Trevor James Alto flutes. Both are very nice. Jupiter makes a decent one, as well as Sonare and Emerson. If you want a REALLY nice one Miyazawa, Altus, and Sankyo (maybe?) are all really nice. :)
