1 or 2 bands? Will it halt my exam progress?

I have just found out that after my music audition I got into a band and a flute choir. I can do the band as it is at a weekend but the choir is on a Tuesday and transport isn't arranged. Next year is also my GCSE (major exams) year and I wouldn't want it to make me too busy to revise. However I do think that the flute choir would be an amazing opportunity. What should I do?

Nicki, it sounds like you want to try flute choir ... I would go for it, and if it starts to interfere with your studies, then you can drop out. But you might find it doesn't get in the way as much as you fear. You will learn so much by playing with a group of flutists (especially about intonation, ha!)

Yes, it does sound good, but the thing is that you have to go to every practice, you have to sign this agreement that you will, so I have to make a final decision before the beginning of August. thanks for your comment

Ooohh I can see your dilemma then. It's a tough one! All I can say is that participating in a flute choir is a fantastic experience... but even if you don't do it, you'll probably have other chances in the future!

Thanks, well you see, as from September I will be the oldest you can be, so I will probably move up a band/orchestra. I will see how it goes and I think at the moment, I will just stick with the band rather than the flute choir

I'm not sure if things have changed but when I did my GCSEs part of the coursework for Music was playing in a group and improvising in a group, maybe you can use the bands to help along your grades as well ?

I used to play in various bands and outfits and keep a diary of the performances problems found, improvements made etc...

in my gcse year i only took part in 1 county ensemble (an orchestra) even though i had got a place in the windband as well but during the past 2 years when i've been doing my a/s levels and a levels i've been in both an orchestra and a windband (one at the weekend and 1 on a tuesday, same as you!) and i havent found that it interfered with my studies, as around exam time you're on study leave anyway, although if i had an exam the day after the rehersal then i did tend to skip the rehersal to study. i think you'll find that most ensembles will be understanding in that situation, especially if you are commited to the ensemble during the rest of the year.
