different cuts of Sankyo headjoint
hi Everyone
I was wondering if any one has experience of the different cuts (see types pasted below) of the Sankyo headjoint. (or other different cuts within one manufacturer) Do the headjoints really perform significantly differently re registers as the manufacturer describes them? if different people play say the headjoint that "favours the lower register" would they all really feel that "yes this headjoint favours the lower register" because the cut makes the difference so pronounced, despite their personal playing differences?
not having access to all the different cuts i don't know whether the differences would warrant specifying one by matching the descriptions to my needs or just not specify it and go with the one that comes standard.
any opinions would be much appreciates. Thank you
sankyo headjoints:
ST Family
The ST head joint family contains three design variations on the classic sankyo standard lip plate. This family features a very rich breadth of tone color and ease of control combined with a well-balanced resonance between all registers. This family consists of three options designated by ST-1, ST-2 and ST-3.
[ ST-1 ]
Favoring the lower register, this headjoint will facilitate deep and rich tone colors.
[ ST-2 ]
Sankyo's standard head joint provides a balanced resonance equally across all registers.
[ ST-3]
This head joint favors the upper register and promotes brighter tone colors.
RT Family
The RT head joint family contains three design variations on the modern Sankyo original lip plate. This family features deeper tone colors in the lower register and an impressive response across the registers with this original lip plate. This family consists of three different options, designated by RT-1, RT-2 and RT-3.
[ RT-1]
Favoring the lower register, this headjoint will facilitate dynamic tones.
[ RT-2 ]
Sankyo's newest head joint style, featuring a good combination of RT-1 and RT-3 element, provides a balanced resonance throughout registers.
[ RT-3 ]
This Head joint favors the upper register and promotes brilliant tone colors.
FT
FT head joint style is designed to offer a stable and an even sound quality across the registers. Its lush tone colors in upper regiter is notable.

The cut on the Sankyo does make a difference, I own two sankyo flutes both models made for the japanese market and they both have different cut headjoints. I didn't get the choice of which headjoint I got on either of my sankyo's but I can tell you there is a difference in the cuts. I have an ST-2 and an ST-3.
Hope this helps

hi neonG
Thank you very much for your reply. Do you find that your ST3 does perform better on the upper register as Sankyo describes it? Many thanks.

The ST-3 does perform better at the top except it is not only very bright it can also be very loud so you need to be prepared to learn how to control the sound a bit more than that of the ST-2
you might like to have a look at this link you will need to translate it though using something like google translate or similar

The link for Prima I provided is definitely a better website I was sent the link by a Japanese sales person from sankyo when I was shopping for my new flute. I have a sankyo brochure I was given in Tokyo at a flute fair has more information about head joints and flutes in it however it is in Japanese. They seem to offer up a lot more information on their products in Japanese that is for sure.

I have a Prima Sankyo Artist that I bought last year. It is used and was reconditioned by Miles Davis at Miles Ahead Music in Kentucky. Since Miles did not know how old the flute is, he was not sure which headjoint I purchased with it. From looking at the pictures, I believe it is the RT-2. Is there any way to tell from the headjoint itself? Is there something besides the Sankyo logo that would have the headjoint number?

Anyone interested in Sankyo, you might want to have a look at this shop next time you visit Japan:
Dolce Flute Salon
http://www.dolce.co.jp/flute/index.html
It looks like they have a fairly big selection. I contancted them and was astonished to be told that they have all the 7 different cuts in stock, so (provided that nobody has just walked in and bought one of them) if you get a Sankyo there you can try all the different heads and pick the one you like to go with the flute. of course if you are just after the head the choices are there. and i suppose they would have a full range of the other Japanese makers as well. the small Sankyo company office itself in Tokyo doesn't have all available to try.

I sent an email to Sankyo about my Prima Sankyo Artist, and got the information the very next day. I was amazed at such a prompt response! Now I am even more amazed that my flute is 27 years old and is still so wonderful! It is a joy to play! I can't recommend this flute more!

I told you...
I'm happy that you accomplished that. Just like you I'm also very happy with my Sankyo. It's really a workhorse in terms of reliability of the mechanism, durability and so on.

Re: different cuts of Sankyo headjoint
Hi !!
I'm about to buy a sankyo head. I'm deciding between FT and ST-2 headjoints. I understand that the two are equally balanced resonance across all registers according to the website sankyo.
I live in Colombia, where I can not try before you buy. I will buy online to a US store.
I understand that the choice is very personal, however I appreciate if you can advise me according to your experience or knowledge on the subject.
sorry my English.
can you help me?
