must it take to play them and the keys look they are hand sized and spread so
far apart?? Interesting.

I think they must make a low, mellow, deep sound although I have never heard one. There are only a few in the world. If you go to flutes.tk (or it could be flute.tk, I cannot remember :S), then it has a link to sites about them I think :D

Hi ~ I play in a large Flute Orchestra in Michigan that actually owns a contra-bass flute! I haven't had a chance to try it yet (we are a large group, and I have to wait my turn!) but you should HEAR it! It's glorious - deep and throaty, almost like a pipe organ. It adds a lovely depth to our music, and we have had a couple pieces this year, commissioned to feature it. It's awesome!!

Wow, that looks.... gorgeous. Alright... I know that might not be the word I'm looking for but... wow! And I thought the bass flute was impressive... I want to try a low flute so bad! Even trying an Alto would be good enough for me. :D But... my instructor says I have to wait until high School. Ah well.... I'll wait. Anyways... Those pictures are wicked sweat! 8)

I'm the exact opposite, Tennis, I want something that goes higher then the piccolo :)

(greater question is, how in the world do you play that thing well)

I love low flutes, I tried a gold bass flute a fair a few weeks ago and as soon as I started the room got quite and a bunch of people went into like a trance. It was embarressing but that's ok. It's a very (this isn't quite the word im looking for) seductive instrument.

Apparently there is a flute 6 FEET TALL!!!!

Called the subcontrabass flute, I'm dying to play one

if you guys want to play lower flutes, try and see if your band director will let you do a flute choir for solo/ensembles..

I dont think any higher would be very nice sounding. Drive the dogs nuts though.

I attended the National Flute Association convention in Nashville this fall, and had a chance to play a contrabass flute. It was very interesting, but I wouldn't want to own one.

go to wikipedia.com and look up flutes. there are lower flutes than the contrabass flute. the lowest is a hyper bass. (4 octaves below a concert flute) 15 meters long

I played one at flute convention!! It was gorgeous and I actually was able to play a D major scale. It took quite a bit of air, but was gorgeous.

I just played this also! A bit more air is needed, but mostly a very flexible, relaxed embouchure, like an extension of the lowest notes on your C flute. The key buttons are clustered closely, like on an alto, but, of course, the holes are spread proportionally over the length of the (very long!!!) flute tube. I'm 5' 10", and it made me feel, uh, dainty. :D
