G foot? C foot?

Post by juneroses »

This is something I've always wondered...

How can you tell what kind of foot-thingy your flute is?
What is it exactly?
I want to know what kind my flute is and why the foot thing is so important. Sorry for the stupid question but i was never taught this!

Most flutes either have a C foot or a B foot. A C foot has two keys on the top of the footjoint (and one on the side). With this footjoint, the flute is capable of playing down to low C below the staff. Almost all beginner model flutes have a C foot. Some flutes, generally intermediate and beyond, have a B foot which has three keys on the top of the foot joint. With this foot, a flute is capable of playing down to low B below the staff.

In line with your D# key (your right-hand little finger), at the end of your foot joint, are there two large keys with pads, or three (not including the D# key)? If there are two--C# and C--it's a C foot. If there are three--C#, C, and B--it's a B foot. :)
