Hi. I''ma sax player who doubles on flute, which I REALLY
enjoy playing. Up until now I''ve been using a Gemeinhardt which I bought for
about $150. It''s served me well for the past three years or so, but now
I''m looking for something a bit more substantial. I play mostly jazz, funk
and RnB, with a bit of session work here and there, so I guess I''m looking
for a jazz flute. Can anyone recommend something that I could buy used for no
more than $700? Thanks[] Charles

In that price range, I have always liked Yamaha flutes. You
should probably be able to get a used YFL-481 (or YFL-481B - with a low B) for
that price. It is silver and open hole (maybe you don't want that so check
first) and sounds pretty good. Dave Valentin plays on a Yamaha flute (although a
much more expensive one) but even the cheaper models have a fairly nice tone.
Ultimately, you should just test a few and see what you like best and what sound
you are aiming for. Best of luck, Charles.

As a jazz player you have some options. Flutes are pitched in
other keys besides C. I play in Philadelphia and many doublers here use Bb
flutes. E. M. Winston makes an inexpensive one that I have seen used. There are
Eb flutes available, but metal ones are very rare. Also, they are primarily used
in irish and native american music; hence possess a very sweet tone. Something
else to take into consideration in the tone you want to achieve. This will
dictate thin vs. heavy wall, solid silver vs. plated and ultimately the brand.
Personally, I use a C haynes that I picked up used from Mike Hammer for a good
price. It has a bright tone and cuts through the band. But, as always, to each
their own. Good luck.

C Haynes? Can you tell me about this instrument? I am trying
to find a new instrument (see my topic in main thread).
