They're a blast

Our flute choir has a contrabass. Although I don't regularly play it I got a chance to try it (as did the rest of the choir). It takes a lot of control and it's huge but it adds such depth to our choir. Ours is not the silver Klingma flute but is a more affordable PVC (yes, plumbing pipes, the kind attached to the bottom of the toilet) but it makes a wonderful sound. If you get a chance, go for it!

Yup, our flute choir has a contra and a sub contra, both of which are amazing. I personally favor the contra, as the sub contra is more key slaps than anything (even when a microphone is used), but both are pretty interesting instruments.
