Solid silver pitch.

Post by Flute_star3 »

Hello all! I recently purchased a solid silver Sonare (SF7BOF) on the flute world website. This is the first step up flute I have purchased (I was just on a student Gemienhardt before). Anyway, while I was comparing the sounds of the two headjoints, I noticed this new flute is about a half step sharper than my old one. Is this common to Solid Silver instruments? How can I make it more on key? Thank you for your time!

You can adjust the intonation of the flute by pulling the head joint out or by pushing it further in. The metal used makes no difference.

One of my students has a Sonare, and she experienced the same problem (hers is the 5000 model which is silver plated). After a while, she adjusted fine.

Be sure to check your pitch with a tuner and push in/pull out the appropriate length (push in if it is flat and vice versa). After tuning the headjoint to your tuning pitch (I use a natural), check the tuner with other notes. This should give you an indication as to which notes will be sharp and you can adjust your embouchure accordingly. Once you get used to the new flute, it should not be a major problem.

Oh yea, congrats on your new flute!

Adjust the headjoint. As for initial pitch discrepencies, your Sonare is probably tunes a little higher in pitch. The standard pitch for student instruments is A=440, and most 'step up' flutes and higher, use the standard pitch of A=442. So, that is probably the initial source of your problem.

Also, check the headjoint cork position. Even though it is new, it is quite possible that the headjoint cork is out of place if adjusting the headjoint doesnt help a great deal.
