Types of cloths

Post by howardh »

I just got myself a flute care kit and three different kinds of cloths came with it: Microfiber cloth, silver cloth, and cheese cloth. I know what the microfiber cloth is for, as it says on the FAQ. What are the other two used for? Can any of these be used to clean the inside?

The "cheese" cloth should be used for the inside. The "silver" cloth [also known as a silver polishing cloth] should be rarely used. These types of polishing cloths are infused with silver polish which contains abrasives. So basically, they strip away a very fine layer of metal as they clean. That is why your flute is so shiny afterward.

So, I would avoid using that one very often [in fact, you might want to just put it away for good- that's what I did with mine]. If you have a plated instrument [not solid silver/gold] then the polish will eventually wear through the plating, exposing the base metal.
